By Silvertongardener - Posted on 01 July 2010

In the heart of the Colorado San Juan Mountains, Silverton’s “4th of July Blue Ribbon Fun Run” sports a 2K, 5K, & 10K course starting at Memorial Park, through the woods, and along the Animas River towards Howardsville. The course is primarily on dirt roads & paths with some paved surfaces, & 10Ker’s take a short sprint through a small stream.

The 4th Fun Run was originally founded by a couple of local Silvertonians, Ken Safranski & Joe Zimmerman twenty-nine years ago where a six-pack of Pabst Blue Ribbon was mandated as an entry fee. This year the entry fee for walkers or runners is $15 for youth under 18 & $20 for adults (and no beer is required). Registration is offered the day of the race from 6:30- 7:20 am by the gazebo at Memorial Park or pre-register to avoid the lines @ ultrasignup.com. Each participant will receive a July 4th, 2010 T-Shirt, a bottle of water, cups of Powerade, & a goody bag (filled with samples & interesting reading material including the “Silverton Magazine” & the “Silverton Standard” newspaper. The second edition of the “Silverton Youth Center’s Cookbook” will be for sale for $16.95. All proceeds benefit the Silverton Youth Center. For additional info call Loretta St George, 970-387-5575. See you at the races!
