Campaign Diary #9. Transparency in county government.

By Bob - Posted on 09 September 2010

Yesterday, Sept. 8, I attended the bi-weekly SJC county commissioners meeting. Medical Marijuana Public Hearing was on the agenda. When the marijuana item came up the chairman of the commissioners stated that he was against selling medical marijuana in the county. He then asked the four spectators at the meeting if they had anything to say on the matter. I spoke up saying that the public hearing had not been announced in the newspaper so no one knew about it so it wasn't really a public hearing. This is a problem with the Board of County Commissioners. They tend to make decisions without public input. The chairman grumbled about my objection to the way they were doing business, but one of the other commissioners supported me so they decided to have another public hearing in 30 days. We'll have to wait and see if this meeting is publicized. The chairman stated that regardless of what was said at the public hearing his mind was made up. This is one of the reasons I am running for office. I listen to all sides of an issue before I make up my mind. Medical marijuana is here to stay. Maybe having a dispensary in the county will bring business and tax money to SJC. At least let's be transparent. Let's give people the chance to state their opinions on this issue.
